Since we started, Gabriel Symphony Foundation has sponsored the operation of 243 children with cleft lip and palate.
These babies and many more are able to smile and face a much brighter future through the help of the foundation and the contributions of our family and friends. From the moment we meet them, Gabriel's own midwife Nita Aquino accompanies them for their first check-up in PGH. To do this, Nita has to be there at 3:30 in the morning to ensure that they get an appointment sometime that day!
After the initial check-up, they still have to do numerous lab tests, sometimes repeatedly. Once cleared, they are scheduled for admission. But that is not all. There is the issue of an available bed. Assuming you get a bed, the baby has to be constantly monitored that he is in perfect health because they cannot do the operation if he has a cold, fever or any medical condition. Sometimes our babies are there for weeks, just waiting to be cleared, going in and out of the hospital. It is very difficult, particularly for those who come from the province.
We talk to the doctors and the parents. We run around buying medicine, we go from one department to the next, requesting files, getting lab tests. We buy them food, we wait in line for them. Can you imagine a single mom doing this all by herself? This is what our patients and their parents go thru all the time.
Finally, when the go-signal for the operation is given, we have to buy all the medicines, a lot of which are not available in PGH. The surgery for cleft lip takes about 2-2/12 hours only, longer if it is a gum or palate operation. Some of the babies have cleft lips that only require one operation. Others have cleft palates and cleft lips that require a subsequent operation when they are a bit older.
Recently, the Gabriel Symphony Foundation Inc. tied up with the Dr. Paulo Malvar Mendoza Foundation (headed by Ms. Naty Mendoza), Gen. Malvar Hospital Foundation (headed by Dr. Potenciano Malvar), Asia Rainbow Philippines Inc. (headed by Mr. Oscar delo Santos) and Operation Rainbow Australia Ltd.-USA (ORAL) (headed by Ms. Wilma Dunne RN). ORAL-USA is a group of Australian volunteer doctors who perform cleft lip and cleft palate surgery on children 16 children two years ago and 86 children last year have already undergone surgery sponsored by Gabriel Symphony Foundation. This project was held at the General Malvar Hospital Foundation, along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City on the months of September.
There are numbers of children lined-up for this project every year, however only a few are usually allowed to undergo the operation because some of the children may either be ill or not physically fit at the time of schedule for operation. Since the Australian doctors are only here for a short while, Gabriel Symphony Foundation will continue to give these children their medications and will oversee their operation as soon as they are healthy enough to undergo the procedure.
Aside from the children who were not operated on, the Gabriel Symphony Foundation continous to accept more children with cleft lift and cleft palate for line-up for operation. With your help, we are hoping to put smiles on these children's faces soon and allow them to live normal and healthy lives.
There are many children out there who need our help. For just P7,500, you can change a child's life. God bless you. |
